Does anybody know anything about an old tape format called Hi-band Umatic? I believe it was used in broadcast in the eighties, but has now been replaced by digital etc. Basically I wondered (a) if anywhere still uses it/stocks the tapes, and (b) what sort of quality/resolution it offers. Is it comparable to Betacam? I have been offered an old Umatic deck which I was thinking of using for copying footage onto from DV. Any info at all would be greatfully received.

There are three U-matic variants: Lo-Band, Hi-Band, and SP Hi-Band. The latter being the highest resolution of the three analogue composite formats. Hi-band was supersided by betacam in the mid-80's as the standard for broadcast video. U-Matic's image doesn't fair particularly well to duplication due to the narrow system bandwidth.
Hi-band tapes are still available at Blanx.
